4. Latest Developments:
Teach In
There will be a Teach In scheduled for September 25 and 26. During the Teach
In, faculty members and students will spend 10-20 minutes discussing the recent
budget cuts, the increase in student fees, and ways to protest these problems.
Professional Development Funds
There is approximately $35,000 available for professional development, campus
wide. According to college administration, continuing programs will be funded
first, with secondary importance given to new projects and programs.
Governor's Race
Tom Birmingham is the MTA's choice for governor.
5. Grievance Report
2001-2002 Grievances: 39 grievances; 15-16 resolved; 3 went on to Step
2.
Internal Resolution of Grievances: Both Acting Academic Vice Presidents (Saunders and Lapkin) work hard to resolve grievances on campus and avoid arbitration. Grievance Officer Vaughn will be trying to resolve a number of grievances outside of arbitration with the assistance of R. Whalen, MTA lawyer, and M. Peters, administration lawyer.
Grievances in Arbitration: Grievances in arbitration are difficult to resolve quickly due to the difficulty in scheduling arbitration dates. This date coordination is a particular problem for Day Contract Grievances. Grievances in arbitration cost quite a bit of money in legal fees to resolve.
Basis of Grievances (examples): unhealthy working conditions, scheduling problems; academic freedom, PeopleSoft, governance issues, salaries.
6. Treasurer's Report:
The report included the following figures:
Expenses for FY 03:$22,975
Income from 3rd/4th quarter dues: $6,440
Checking Account Balance (September 9, 2002): $1984.77
Savings Account Balance (May 2002): $1530
Expenditures (May 02-August 02): $4,462.49
Outstanding Bills: $3,171.65
Outstanding bills will be paid according to priority in due dates.
7. New Business:
New Chairs Meeting
There was some discussion regarding the need for a New Chairs meeting. This
would be an opportunity for old and new department/area chairs to exchange information
on the responsibilities and challenges of serving as chair with the assistance
of the MSCA, not administration.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:40 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy George, secretary
