Instructions to Use the 2009-2012 Pay Increase Spreadsheet

On June 26th the MSCA and COP agreed that each longevity share will be worth $57.30 on July 1, 2009.  The spreadsheet assumes the same value ($57.30) for each longevity share on July 1, 2010 (the exact value will not be known until spring 2010) and a value of $35 for each share on July 1, 2011 (a portion of the pool will be used for post-tenure review increases during the 2011-2012 academic year).

On June 26, 2009 the MSCA and COP agreed that the formulary pool ratio will be 0.0605 on July 1, 2009.  The spreadsheet assumes the same value (0.0605) for the formulary pool ratio on July 1, 2010 (the exact value will not be known until spring 2010).

Members who use the 2009-2012 Pay Increase Spreadsheet should refer to the “Experience Explanations” (Article XIII-A, pages 232-233 of the 2004-2007 collective bargaining agreement) for the contractual definitions of the experience categories contained in the spreadsheet. Please enter your personal information into the spreadsheet according to these directions:

Academic Rank (as of July 1, 2009):

Use the drop-down menu to select your rank as of July 1, 2009.  If you were granted a promotion this past spring, the promotion will not take effect until September 1, 2009 and your rank prior to that promotion should be selected.

Years of Full-time State College Teaching/Library Experience (as of July 1, 2009):

Faculty:  As of the end of the spring 2009 semester, total all of your years of full-time teaching experience at a Massachusetts State College only (including Boston State, but excluding UMass or Massachusetts Community Colleges). A semester should be counted as a ½ year (0.5); half of a semester as a ¼ year (0.25). Enter the total number of years in the space indicated.

Librarians:  As of July 1, 2009, total all of your years of full-time professional librarian experience at a Massachusetts state college only (including Boston State, but excluding UMass or Massachusetts Community Colleges). Round off extra calendar months to the nearest ¼ year (0.25). Enter the total number of years in the space indicated.

Only MSCA full-time unit service should be counted; no administrative experience or periods of unpaid leaves of absence may be counted.

Years of Full-time non-State College Teaching/Library Experience (as of July 1, 2009):

Faculty:  As of the end of the spring 2009 semester, total all of your years of full-time teaching experience at the college/university level at any institution other than a Massachusetts State College (include UMass and Massachusetts Community Colleges here). If you are a member of an education department or were hired prior to September 1, 1970, include all of your years of full-time K-12 teaching experience. A semester should be counted as a ½ year (0.5); half of a semester as a ¼ year (0.25). Enter the total number of years in the space indicated.

Librarians:  As of July 1, 2009, total all of your years of full-time professional librarian experience at any colleges and universities other than a Massachusetts State College (include UMass and Massachusetts Community Colleges here). Round off extra calendar months to the nearest ¼ year (0.25). Enter the total number of years in the space indicated.

No administrative experience or periods of unpaid leaves of absence may be counted.

Terminal Degree (as of July 1, 2009):

Select “Yes” from the drop-down menu if you hold a terminal degree as defined in Article I (pages 11-13) of the 2004-2007 collective bargaining agreement as of July 1, 2009. In general, for faculty, a terminal degree is a doctorate in any field, an appropriate master’s degree plus 72 graduate credits in certain professional fields, or an MFA in the creative arts. For librarians, the terminal degree is an MLS with a total of 72 graduate credits, or a doctorate in any field.

Select “No” from the drop-down menu if you do not hold a terminal degree as described above or if your degree was conferred after August 31, 2008.  In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, members are not credited with the degree until the September 1 following conferral.

Years of Full-time Professional Experience (prior to hire):

If you were credited with years of full-time experience in certain fields (see Article XIII-A for details) on your Appendix O-1 or Appendix O-2 form prior to being hired at the state colleges or on your Salary Equity Data Sheet during the 1986-89 contract, enter this number in the space indicated.

Post-tenure Review, Alternative One Percentage Increase (if any):

If you were granted a salary increase (either 3% or 6%) under post-tenure review, Alternative One in any of the last four academic years (including the 2008-2009 academic year), select from the drop-down menu the appropriate percentage increase that you received.

Annual Salary as of June 30, 2009:

Use your Pay Advice, not your W-2 Form, to determine your current salary. You can use the most recent Pay Advice you received, unless you were granted a post-tenure review increase (or a change in that increase as a result of a reconsideration or appeal) this spring and that increase (or additional increase) has not yet been applied.  In that case, you should check with payroll to find out what your new salary is (or will be) after that increase has been applied. This figure should be entered in the space indicated.

If you have entered this information correctly, the spreadsheet will yield your new salary on July 1, 2009 and a reasonably good estimate of your pay amount the rest of the 2009-2012 agreement.  Members promoted or who receive terminal degree adjustments during this term of the agreement should contact their Chapter President to ensure that those increases are calculated correctly.

Please note that the July 1, 2009 longevity and formulary increases are being implemented in July 2009.  The 1.5% salary increases effective July 1, 2009 will not be implemented until the BHE submits its cost estimate to the governor, the governor submits a funding request to the legislature, the legislature passes the funding request bill, the governor signs the funding bill and the Commonwealth releases those funds to the colleges.
