Retroactive Pay Spreadsheets for Promotion and Terminal Degree

Instructions to Use the Retroactive Pay Spreadsheets for Promotion and Terminal Degree

This spreadsheets should only be used if you were promoted or received a terminal degree adjustment (or both) that took effect on September 1, 2007. If you were not promoted or received a terminal degree adjustment on September 1, 2007, then instead use the Faculty or Librarian Spreadsheet.

Members who use the Retroactive Pay Spreadsheets should refer to the “Experience Explanations” (Article XIII-A, pages 232-233) for the contractual definitions of the experience categories contained in the spreadsheet. Please enter your personal information into the spreadsheet according to these directions:

Academic Rank on June 30, 2007:

Enter your academic rank as it was on June 30, 2007 as follows:

(Full) Professor, enter “Professor”.
Senior Librarian, enter “Senior Lib”
Associate Professor, enter “Associate”
Librarian, enter “Librarian”
Assistant Professor, enter “Assistant”
Associate Librarian, enter “Assoc Lib”
Assistant Librarian, enter “Asst Lib”

Years of Full-time Massachusetts State College Teaching/Library Experience (as of June 30, 2007)

Faculty: As of June 30, 2007, total all of your years of full-time teaching experience at a Massachusetts State College only. A semester should be counted as a ½ year (0.5), half a semester as a ¼ year (0.25). Enter the total number of years in the space indicated. Do not include any other teaching experience in this space. This number is used to compute the longevity increase and may be different than the number you enter for the section below.

Librarians: As of June 30, 2007, total all of your years of full-time professional librarian experience at a Massachusetts State College only. Round off extra calendar months to the nearest ¼ year (0.25). Enter the total number of years in the space indicated. Do not include any other library experience in this space. This number is used to compute the longevity increase and may be different than the number you enter for the section below.

No administrative experience or periods of unpaid leaves of absence may be counted here.

Years of Full-time Teaching/Library Experience (as of June 30, 2007)

Faculty: As of June 30, 2007, total all of your years of full-time teaching experience at the college/university level, in the state colleges as well as other institutions. If you are a member of an education department or were hired prior to September 1, 1970, include all your years of full-time K-12 teaching experience. A semester should be counted as a ½ year (0.5), half a semester as a ¼ year (0.25). Enter the total number of years in the space indicated.

Librarians: As of June 30, 2007, total all of your years of full-time professional librarian experience, in the state colleges as well as other colleges and universities. Round off extra calendar months to the nearest ¼ year (0.25). Enter the total number of years in the space indicated.

No administrative experience or periods of unpaid leaves of absence may be counted here.

Terminal Degree (as of August 31, 2006)

Enter “yes” if you held a terminal degree in accordance with the definition of terminal degree found in Article I, pages 11-13, as of August 31, 2006. In general, for faculty, a terminal degree is a doctorate in any field, an appropriate masters degree plus 72 graduate credits in certain professional fields, or an MFA in the creative arts. For librarians, the terminal degree is an MLS with a total of 72 graduate credits, or a doctorate in any field.

Enter “no” if you did not hold a terminal degree as described above as of August 31, 2006.

Enter “yes” or “no” as appropriate.

Years of Full-time Professional Experience (prior to hire)

If you were credited with years of full-time experience in certain fields (see Article XIII-A for details) on your Appendix O-1 or Appendix O-2 form prior to being hired at the state colleges or on your Salary Equity Data Sheet during the 1986-89 contract, enter this number in the space indicated.

Annual Salary as of June 30, 2007

Use a copy of your Pay Advice, not your W-2 Form, to determine what your salary was on June 30, 2007. You should use the first Pay Advice you received in the month of July 2007. In the Pay Advice section entitled HOURS AND EARNINGS: Current Pay Period, take the figure under “Earnings” and multiply it by 26 (pay periods). This figure should be entered in the space indicated.

Annual Salary as of September 1, 2007

Use a copy of your Pay Advice, not your W-2 Form, to determine what your salary was on September 1, 2007. You should use the first Pay Advice you received in the month of September 2007 (or any subsequent Pay Advice). In the Pay Advice section entitled HOURS AND EARNINGS: Current Pay Period, take the figure under “Earnings” and multiply it by 26 (pay periods). This figure should be entered in the space indicated.

If you have entered all data correctly, the spreadsheet will yield your new annual salary in cell D29 and the effective salary increase percentage in cell D33.

New Biweekly Pay and Retroactivity

The BHE will be implementing the salary increases in three steps.

January 25, 2008: Your Pay Advice dated January 25, 2008 will reflect your new salary, but will not include any retroactivity. This new gross biweekly figure appears in cell F15 of the spreadsheet.

February 8, 2008: Your Pay Advice dated February 8, 2008 will include the retroactive pay (back to July 1, 2007) associated with the 3.5% increase, but not the longevity increase. The amount of this retroactive increase appears in cell F20 of the spreadsheet.

February 22, 2008: Your Pay Advice dated February 22, 2008 will include the retroactive pay (back to July 1, 2007) associated with the longevity increase. The amount of this retroactive increase appears in cell F25 of the spreadsheet.

Cell F30 shows the total of the two retroactive payments.
