RE: Tom Birmingham Press Conference

On August 4, 2002, the MTA Board of Directors voted to recommend Tom Birmingham for governor of Massachusetts. Senator Birmingham has a proven record of making education a priority.

On Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at 2:15 p.m. at the Edward Everett School, 71 Pleasant Street, Dorchester*, a joint press conference will be held with MTA and MFT announcing both organizations' endorsement of Tom Birmingham for governor. We would like to have as many members as possible at this press conference. Please do whatever you can to notify your members.

We are in the process of preparing a letter for all local presidents explaining the process used to reach this recommendation and the rationale for this decision. We are also preparing a flyer for all members and the Regional Grassroots Organizing Committee will be in contact with you to kick off our campaign to support Tom Birmingham for governor and John Slattery for lieutenant governor in the primary on September 17.

This information will also be faxed, e-mailed and posted on MTA's web site at www.massteacher.org.

*Because the Board of Directors vote to recommend Tom Birmingham for governor took place at the Summer Conference in Williamtown, we were unable to plan a press conference in Boston until the week of August 12. In the meantime MFT Board met and also voted to recommend Tom Birmingham for governor. Rather than MTA schedule its own press conference, we felt it was more effective for us to join MFT and hold a joint press conference in Dorchester on August 14.
