Messages to the Membership-Pres. Pat Markunas: MSCA

November 15,2005

Dear MSCA Faculty and Librarians:

At 7:30 on Tuesday evening, I was notified that the bill to fund our collective bargaining agreement will not be enacted during the formal legislative session that ends on November 16th.

MTA lobbyists have a commitment from the leadership in the House that the bill to fund our contract will be acted on during an informal legislative session between now and January 1st. Informal sessions are scheduled twice a week in the House. Once the House has acted on the bill, it will considered by the Senate, whose leadership has also committed to act on the funding bill when it is sent to the Senate from the House. After both houses in the Legislature have acted, the governor has the option to sign or veto the bill. Should a veto occur, we will lobby hard to have the veto overridden.

Thank you for your phone calls to your local representatives and your patience with this irrationally complicated process. It should not be this hard, but it is. I will keep you posted with information that is concrete and verifiable. Thank you again for your support.

Pat Markunas
