October 30,2003
Dear Colleagues:
The hearing on the higher education contracts' funding went very, very well. The hearing was packed with union leaders and members and the energy was very positive. At least 20 representatives showed up to testify in person and many others sent letters of support. There are 133 signatures on Representative Walsh's letter to the speaker.
Seven of the nine state college presidents, plus Fred Clark, were at the State House to meet with the senate president at 10:30 and the speaker at 1:30. They submitted written testimony; Kay Sloan also brought letters from the Mass Art trustees. They were the only representatives of management there -- no university or CC presidents, and no Tocco or Gill, either.
The Committee gave a favorable report to the bill, which now moves to House Ways & Means. My testimony will be posted on the MSCA website on Monday.
