Dear Colleagues:
An article appeared in this morning's Boston Herald, outlining the governor's proposals concerning reorganization of the public higher education system. The article was faxed to each chapter office and can be found on the Herald website.
The article contains several rumors that have been in circulation for several weeks now and directly contradicts the most recent report that we have received about the shape of the reorganization. It is our understanding that the plan is still fluid and no final decisions have been made. With the assistance of MTA, I have sent a response to the Herald about the article, which will be posted on the MSCA website tomorrow <www.mscaunion.org>.
The most serious state college rumor presented in the article is possible privatization of Mass Art and Mass Maritime. Rest assured that the MSCA officers, the MSCA Board of Directors, the MTA and I are unequivocally opposed to any such proposal and will work against it. To demonstrate our commitment to the state college system and public higher education in general, MTA is holding a demonstration prior to Governor Romney's speech presenting House One (the FY 2004 budget) at Suffolk University. I realize that this is short notice, but we need help and participation from anyone who can come to the MTA headquarters tomorrow (Tuesday) at 4:00 pm. MTA is located at 20 Ashburton Place, directly east of the State House in Boston.
Sincerely,
Pat Markunas MSCA President
