Dear Colleagues:
The Representative Asssembly of the National Education Association was held last week in Dallas, Texas. Reggie Weaver (Illinois), the current NEA vice president, defeated Denise Rockwell (California) for a three-year term as NEA president beginning September 1st. Dennis van Roekel (Arizona) ran unopposed for the NEA vice presidency for the same term. Lily Eskelsen (Utah) garnered an impressive 75% of the vote among a field of four candidates to serve as the NEA secretary-treasurer; she will complete van Roekel's term of office.
Marsha Smith (Maryland) and Mike Billirakis (Ohio) were elected to serve on the NEA Executive Committee. Rosemary Riley (Massachusetts) received the highest vote -- 72% -- for re-election as an ESP At-Large member of the NEA Board of Directors. Rosemary works at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and so brings a higher education perspective to her position as well.
The MSCA Perspective should arrive at the home address of all members this week. An update on the status of the state budget and other legislative matters will be posted on this page later this week.
