Dear Colleagues:
At Saturday's MSCA Delegate Assembly, the delegates voted to support NEA's efforts to repeal the Social Security Offsets that penalize those of us in Massachusetts who have earned Social Security benefits or who are the survivors of a spouse with Social Security benefits.
As indicated below, please call US Senators Kennedy and Kerry and your local Congressman on May 1st to urge their support of the repeal of this federal legislation.
Information about action needed on the state budget will be posted later this week. Thank you for your support of these actions.
National Call-In Day to Repeal Social Security Offsets Wednesday, May 1st.
NEA has launched a major nationwide campaign to win repeal of the GPO/WEP. The Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision (GPO/WEP) unfairly cut Social Security benefits for many public employees. The impact is greatest in states where public employees do not participate in Social Security. However, with increased mobility among states, there are affected educators in every state. To learn more about these Social Security offsets, visit http://www.nea.org/lac/socsec.
More than 140 NEA state leaders will be visiting Members of Congress in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, May 1. Support this effort at home by calling your Senators and U.S. Representatives in their local offices on May 1.
The message is simple: “RESPECT PUBLIC SERVICE: SUPPORT LEGISLATION (S. 1523 AND H.R. 2638) TO REPEAL THE GOVERNMENT PENSION OFFSET AND WINDFALL ELIMINATION PROVISION."
