Messages to the Membership-Pres. Pat Markunas: MSCA

October 26, 2001

Dear Colleagues:

The meeting held on October 18th with Senate President Thomas Birmingham went well. BHE Chair Steve Tocco, MTA Executive-Director Ed Sullivan and I stressed the importance of the contract's funding for the state colleges and the significance of honoring the state's commitment at the bargaining table. Chairman Tocco and Chancellor Gill have held meetings with members of the Governor's administration and the Governor herself, urging support of the contract's funding.

MTA lobbyist Arline Isaacson and I have requested a meeting with House Ways and Means Chairman John Rogers. The MTA has developed a direct mail piece, with preprinted postcards for MSCA members to send to reps, senators, and House Speaker Finneran, which will be sent to the entire membership soon. Your assistance in signing, stamping and returning these postcards will be very much appreciated.

I have sent letters to the editor of the Boston Globe and two local papers (MetroWest and Worcester) about the contract funding issue. I have also been in touch with two other papers (Salem and Fitchburg) to pursue press coverage on this issue. The MSCA Perspective for October will be on the campuses next week.

Pat Markunas
MSCA President
