Dear Colleagues:

Debate on the fiscal year 2002 budget will begin in the Senate very soon. Members should call or write to their senators, urging an increase in the state college budgets and opposition to the proposed increase in health insurance premiums for state employees. These contacts are very important, given the serious underfunding of the state college budgets that are proposed by the governor and the House of Representatives.

The contract funding bill is HB 4148. It will not be considered until after the budget has been finalized. We will keep you posted on its progress.

My thanks go to Maynard Seider, chapter president at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, for inviting me to campus for a wonderful day with the membership there. The highlight of the day was a luncheon in celebration of the three campus unions -- MSCA, APA and AFSCME.

This Thursday I will meet with the chapter membership at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. On Friday, the last MSCA Board of Directors meeting will be held at the Academy as well. Both meetings are open to the membership.
