Messages to the Membership-Pres. Pat Markunas: MSCA

May 11, 2001

Dear Colleagues:

The execution of our new contract took place in the Governor's Office yesterday, with Stephen Crosby, Secretary of Administration and Finance, representing the administration. He announced that the legislation needed to initiate funding of our contract has been prepared, signed by Governor Swift, and sent to the Legislature. Given that the statutory time frame for this action is 45 days and Governors Weld and Cellucci usually took two or three weeks beyond that limit, having this legislation prepared and filed in less than a week after ratification must be a record.

A draft copy of the new contractual language has been prepared also. We will review it and reconcile any discrepancies as soon as possible. This will allow us to undertake the enormous task of printing 2500 copies and having them available for the membership by the start of the next academic year.

On behalf of the membership, I thank those members of the MSCA, MTA and the administration who participated in yesterday's signing and who worked behind the scenes to get the legislation and the draft contract ready so quickly. It was an honor to represent you at this ceremony.

Pat Markunas
MSCA President
