Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that the 2001-2003 MSCA/BHE contract was ratified on Friday. The count was 785 in favor and 92 opposed, with 15 challenges and 1 blank. Thanks to all members who participated and to those who assisted with the conduct of the vote on the individual campuses.

Governor Jane Swift has invited the MSCA bargaining committee and MTA officials to participate in a signing ceremony of the new contract. The ceremony will take place at the State House on Thursday afternoon. This invitation marks a positive change from preceding administrations.

I have been advised that preparation of the legislation for funding the contract has been "fast tracked" and may not take the entire statutory 45 days from the date of ratification to be submitted. We will keep the membership informed as the progress of the funding legislation. Members should check the MSCA website for the most up-to-date information throughout the summer.

On behalf of the membership, I thank Governor Swift for these important gestures of support for our new contract. I look forward to meeting her on Thursday.
