Salem Chapter Newsletter President's Message - Amy Everitt - November 2009

Hi everyone. I hope this finds you recovering from a busy advising season. Registration has been frustrating for some and I know that many of you are concerned about the looming lack of print resources for the coming semesters. We have filed a Chapter grievance to address our needs and the Provost has indicated her commitment to working with us to find an acceptable resolution.

The budget is on everyone's mind and I want to make clear that as of this date, the MSCA has NOT been contacted by the Governor's office regarding re-opening our contract or furloughs. That said, our 1.5% has obviously not been funded yet. The DGCE contract is still in mediation and there a meeting scheduled for today. We will keep you posted with any progress on either front.

The bill to repeal limitations on sabbatical leaves (H1170) was reported out favorably from the Joint Committee on Higher Education and has been referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means. Both the MSCA leadership and the Council of Presidents are working to get a vote before the formal session ends. Remember that the deadline for inclusion of this years' faculty is November 19. It is not likely that this date will be met, but we will be in contact immediately if it passed this week.

Optional Retirement Program bill S1173 has not yet been reported out of the Joint Committee on Public Service. We know how important this bill is to many of you and as always, we'll keep you informed of any updates.

It is evaluation season and reappointment evaluations are due. Please do not hesitate to contact Maggie Vaughan or myself if you have any concerns over your evaluations. Remember that these materials are very time sensitive.

Reminders: Applications for professional development monies are due to the Provost no later than December 31, 2009. Do not miss the deadline and you DO NOT have to use Salem State's contracted travel agency for any travel paid with your PD money.

Deadline for registering for the MTA Higher Education Conference to be held at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel and Conference Center on 12/4 and 12/5 is November 18. Reimbursement for registration, travel and hotel is being made available by the MSCA.

Salem Chapter holiday party will be held at the Hawthorne Hotel on Thursday, December 10th from 4-7. Please join us!

Finally, please have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Even though we are facing some tough challenges, we still have much to be thankful for. Travel safely and eat too much!!
